Manage hot moments

Creating inclusive learning environments includes challenging assumptions and responding to microaggressions. There may be times that these encounters in class, cocurricular settings, or department meetings may result in strong reactions, or hot moments.  When conflict arises, we may feel an urge to ignore it and quickly move on. However, it is important that we avoid doing so as this can leave students, staff, faculty, and leaders feeling like they haven’t been heard or that the transgression is acceptable behavior. Managing these moments effectively can turn them into learning experiences for everyone involved.
