Best part for me is always when students make the connection to the real world – as a science educator this usually meant understanding their world a bit better and seeing how things “work”. Love those moments!

I teach exercise science, and I love to give relatable examples of what happens to the body during exercise. I usually start by saying something like, “imagine you’re doing cardio or lifting weights; have you ever experienced this?” (the “this” being what we’re discussing in lecture). Inevitably, students remember experiencing the “this” during exercise, and the lightbulbs go off 😀.

I use a mixture of items to create the perfect class: a short lecture with engaging discussion questions, activities to help them understand the topic, a video of a speech to critique as a class, and an assignment so they can demonstrate what they have learned.
