At the end of the semester in my art appreciation class, I focus on fostering connection and reflection. I encourage students to complete evaluations by asking questions like, “Do you have a favorite artist now?” and “What kind of art interests you?” This helps me improve the course while prompting students to reflect on their learning.
To support my students during the often-stressful close of the semester, I offer an optional artmaking session after class. It serves as both self-care and a chance to earn extra credit, giving students a creative outlet and a positive final experience.
To start 2025 strong, I’ll use student feedback to refine my approach, incorporate more engaging activities, and continue nurturing a classroom culture that inspires a love for art!

I love that artmaking session! I am sure it is very welcome at that stressful time. I know several folks who have started working on themselves more via art therapy!

Hi Adrienne,
I would love to hear more about your art making session. I usually do an exit ticket similar to yours at the end of the year so I can prepare for the next year.

Hi – the last day of the semester is always the final exam and for Fall semester I bring baskets with candy canes and chocolates plus X-mas pencils. Throughout the semester I have gifts (novelty journals/notepads, folders, pens, highlighters, sometimes little gadgets/”toys” and hand sanitizer gels & sprays in lab, etc.) for those students who earn an A or B on major exams and usually bring candy on class days of weeks with holidays. Years ago I used to bake but these days the classes are too large for that; they seem to enjoy the candy just as well. I will see almost all of them the first week in Jan for Spring semester so I don’t write special notes/e-mails until they graduate though I have one-on-one or small group chats with most of them throughout the semesters. They all know they can e-mail or call me pretty much anytime and many do.
To gear up for the next semester I strive to have my syllabuses and course outlines and first couple weeks of handouts/lab reports for the next semester done and duplicated before the X-mas break. I make notes to myself at the end of every semester of things I will change or plan to newly implement to refer to when planning each course for the next year. – R

I am feeling a little bit crazy right now and that is why I am late to post. I teach 6th grade to college. My 6th graders just finished up a sculpture lesson where they created hats we will wear on the day of their final exam and they created sculptures out of toilet paper too. My 7-9th graders are working on the door/hall and decorating it for Christmas contests. And my Art 1-4 classes are all working on various different projects. And college Art Appreciation just ended. So to wrap up the Semester we will be cleaning the Art room with some Christmas music and celebrating with our hats and by hopefully winning the door decorating contest. Students will bring me gifts so I always note that and write a thank you note they will receive during our break. For exams we will do an assessment, exit ticket or a self refection over their artwork.
