Engage students in questioning to develop their critical thinking skills

Critical thinking involves a number of cognitive processes such as evaluating evidence, analyzing arguments, and appreciating the context associated with information (Miller, 2016). Teaching students to think critically is a shift away from viewing learning as memorization of information presented by the teacher to deeper levels of learning. In an online course, having students work to ask good questions helps them contribute to more engaging, interesting, and meaningful discussions and can be explicitly used to develop their critical thinking skills (Miller, 2014).
