Overview

Want to start strong EVERY semester?

The first weeks of the semester are crucial for student success. This self-paced course helps new and veteran faculty set a positive tone, build immediate rapport with their students, clarify course expectations, engage students, and use classroom assessment techniques to monitor student learning. Suitable for faculty who teach in person or online, this self-paced course is divided into two sections.

  • Planning for a Strong Start: Learn to develop announcements that welcome, engage, and motivate students; use a syllabus activity to ensure students’ understanding of course expectations; and collaborate with students to create community norms.
  • Facilitating Active Learning Experiences: Develop short lectures with activities that engage students and use classroom assessment techniques to monitor student learning.

Faculty will gain practical skills and be inspired to immediately apply evidence-based teaching practices, enhancing their teaching and positively impacting student success.

No, you do not need to be actively teaching upon course enrollment. However, you will need to be teaching at some point during the six month access period to apply the evidence-based teaching practices covered in the course. Implementation of practice is required for course completion.

This course contains a curated list of practices designed to help faculty implement teaching practices that align with how students learn best. These practices help to ensure students start strong and remain engaged and motivated throughout your course.

Course-takers may resubmit up to 4 of their completed reflections from this course for credit in the appropriate modules when enrolled in a subsequent ACUE Certification course.

This course contains two sections that will collectively require 58 hours to complete. This range includes time engaging with the course content. Additional time will be required to plan and implement a practice and complete a written reflection. To ensure you can implement the practices from the course while actively teaching, you will be given six months to complete the course.

This course is not on the pathway to Certification, however completed reflections in this course may be resubmitted to meet reflection requirements in future Certification courses. Specifically, completed reflections may be submitted for 2 module reflections in Creating an Inclusive and Supportive [Online] Learning Environment and 2 module reflections in Promoting Active Learning [Online].

Upon completing this course, you will receive a code to redeem $300 off the price of a Certification course.  Code must be redeemed within 1-year of course completion.

To earn the Advanced Certification in the Effective Teaching Practice Framework you must complete the three additional courses, such that all seven courses in the Effective Teaching Practice and Effective Online Teaching Practice have been completed.

The Fostering a Culture of Belonging course is a deeper dive into inclusive practices. Participants will earn a course badge upon completion, but this course does not apply toward the ACUE Certification or Advanced Certification in the Effective Teaching Practice Framework.
