My word professionally is AI. I’ve got to figure out how I want to address that given the current cultural climate. For me personally, the word is heart. As I get older, I want to start doing more based on how I feel instead of what is just logical all the time.

I want to add an AI component where I teach students how to use it per my field.

I’m reading The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. I’ve heard great things about it.

Condensing constructive written feedback to patterns instead of nitpicking each issue. This saved me hours of grading and my students have still been able to figure out what they needed to revise without me saying as much. I imagine this will be even more true as more of them use AI software in revision.

I learned that I like taking on complex mental projects. It’s something that I’ve always naturally done, but I never noticed that it’s actually a habit of mine until this semester as I started an AI redesign project for my courses after attending a ton of workshops and webinars on the subject.

My advice would be to be more flexible. I grew up with a bunch of rigid teachers and professors and thought that was the way to be professional. It turns out that really doesn’t work well in a classroom, especially now.

I was reminded a couple days ago that everything isn’t always what it seems with students. I had a student show up 40 minutes late to class. It was the second time she showed up extremely late and we had a conversation about it. She expressed that she absolutely wants to be successful in the course and will do her best to show up on time. I’m all about students connecting with each other and learning to socialize a little bit. I was excited that one of my students volunteered to provide notes to an absent classmate. I want my classroom to feel like a community and I think we’re on the way there.
