My university is a fairly large one, but my specific discipline (physics) has a much lower enrollment than many other majors, so the students in a given cohort will likely see each other in every one of their classes throughout their four-year degree. This is an environment that is ripe for personal connection, and I have seen recently that one of the students who takes a leading role in our Society of Physics Students club has been making significant efforts to get both the physics students and physics faculty together for social events outside of the classroom. He has organized, on his own initiative, a student/faculty volleyball game and is in the process of organizing a card game night as well that he hopes to make a recurring event. I think that his efforts will lead to a stronger physics department as a whole and help to foster a stronger sense of community among its members.
