My “secret sauce” is creating a safe and welcoming space where students feel comfortable sharing, whether by unmuting or using the chat. I’ve found that more students engage through the chat, and since both methods count toward their required participation points, it adds a little extra incentive.
When COVID began and we were all feeling isolated, I started a practice that I’ve kept for every live online class session. Before I officially begin recording, we start with a “share good things” segment. Students can share successes—whether school-related, personal, or job-related—and the group becomes a supportive community to celebrate with them. I participate too, so they see my human side, which helps make the course feel more relatable.
This combination of structure, relatability, and incentive really encourages buy-in and meaningful participation!
