As I mention all the time (sorry), in an online environment instructors need to approach student needs in an “innovative” way. I have always used a well-written Welcome Message that emphasizes “we are all in the same boat, I’m the Captain, but all of you are my important co-captains. If the bot sinks, we all go down with it”. Including aspects of inclusivity, my availability for support, allow the time you can for students to get to know you and each other, regularly when you’re communicating with them, allows for student sense of self, their validity, and that they are in a safe place to participate and learn. Some students may require more of your time.
