SUMMARY:From Classroom to Career: An Experiential Learning Model for Workforce Readiness
DESCRIPTION:What happens when a course is designed to function like the workplace students hope to enter? Join Dr. Alexander Núñez-Torres\, Chair of Management and Business Innovation at Lehman College\, for a practical exploration of how authentic\, career-connected learning can transform student engagement and readiness. \nDrawing on an innovative equity research course that integrates the Bloomberg Terminal\, industry professionals\, and real-world deliverables\, Dr. Núñez-Torres will share strategies for creating learning experiences where students actively practice the work of a profession rather than simply study it. Participants will explore approaches for scaffolding students toward independence\, partnering with practitioners as ongoing collaborators\, assessing authentic artifacts instead of traditional exams\, and helping students develop critical AI literacy by verifying AI-generated outputs against trusted data sources. \nWhether you teach in business\, STEM\, the humanities\, or professional programs\, you’ll leave with adaptable design principles for building more authentic\, workforce-connected learning experiences that prepare students for success beyond the classroom. \nAbout Dr. Alexander Núñez-Torres: Dr. Alexander Núñez-Torres is a finance scholar and Chair of the Department of Management and Business Innovation at Lehman College. His research spans mortgages\, banking systems\, corporate finance\, and empirical asset pricing\, with publications in leading journals including the Journal of Financial Economics. Through innovative teaching practices and community-based projects\, he connects rigorous academic inquiry with real-world application\, expanding equitable access to experiential learning opportunities.

SUMMARY:The Civic Mindset: Turning Hot Topics into Student Success
DESCRIPTION:Local and national elections represent important moments in American life. Even in courses where politics don’t typically enter the classroom\, all students are living in an ecosystem that is affected when an important election is happening. Rather than shying away from the moment\, we can use these opportunities to model how to discuss and teach hot topics. In this session\, we will address how best to facilitate classroom learning on topics that have the potential to create “hot moments” in the classroom.  \nDon’t miss this opportunity to learn directly from Leah A. Murray\, Ph.D\, how she handles hot topics in the classroom. Sign up now!  \nAbout Dr. Murray: \nLeah Murray is the Brady Presidential Distinguished Professor in the Department of Political Science and Philosophy at Weber State University\, a recipient of the Barbara Burch Award for Faculty Leadership in Civic Engagement and was recognized as the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences Endowed Professor for 2017 – 2020. She currently serves as the Director of the Olene S. Walker Institute of Politics & Public Service\, for which she leads Weber State Votes\, the campus’s student voter engagement effort\, which has earned numerous recognitions. Murray holds a BA from Syracuse University and a Ph.D. from the University at Albany and is the author or co-author of 2 books\, 12 journal articles and book chapters.

SUMMARY:Between the Lines featuring Karen Costa\, author of "An Educator's Guide to ADHD"
DESCRIPTION:What if some of the challenges we see in our classrooms are not deficits to be fixed\, but signals that our learning environments could better support the diverse ways students think\, learn\, and engage? \nJoin educator\, author\, and faculty development expert Karen Costa for a conversation about creating learning experiences that help all students succeed. Drawing from the ideas explored in her new book\, An Educator’s Guide to ADHD\, Karen invites us to reconsider common assumptions about attention\, motivation\, organization\, and academic performance. Rather than focusing solely on barriers\, she offers a strengths-based perspective that highlights the creativity\, insight\, and unique contributions neurodivergent learners bring to our classrooms. \nIn a discussion with Penny MacCormack\, ACUE’s Founding Chief Academic Officer\, Karen will explore practical approaches for designing courses that reduce unnecessary cognitive load\, support executive functioning\, and challenge students to grow while providing the structure they need to succeed. Together\, they will examine how inclusive teaching practices can foster resilience\, belonging\, and deeper learning\, not only for students with ADHD\, but for all learners. \nWhether you are looking to better support neurodiverse students or create more engaging and equitable learning experiences\, this conversation will offer fresh insights and actionable ideas for your teaching practice.

SUMMARY:Small Shifts\, Big Impact: Supporting Neurodivergent Students in Higher Education
DESCRIPTION:This interactive workshop moves beyond theory to equip higher education faculty with concrete\, ready-to-implement strategies that promote access\, engagement\, and well-being for neurodivergent learners. \nParticipants will explore how small\, intentional adjustments to course design\, communication\, and classroom practices can reduce barriers without adding significant time or workload. These approaches not only support neurodivergent students\, but also strengthen clarity\, flexibility\, and belonging across diverse student populations. \nMore about Dr. Frith: \nDr. Frith earned her Ph.D. in Special Education from Temple University. She spent fourteen years in the PK–12 public school sector\, serving as a special education classroom teacher for five years and as a Learning Disabilities Teacher-Consultant (LDT-C) for nine years. She subsequently transitioned to higher education and is currently a full-time Specialist Professor and LDT-C Program Contact in the Department of Special Education at Monmouth University. \nDr. Frith teaches both preservice and in-service educators in undergraduate and graduate courses focused on assessment\, individualized education program (IEP) development\, special education technology\, strategy instruction\, evidence-based practices\, learning theories\, and special education law. In her role as LDT-C Program Advisor\, she teaches\, mentors\, and supervises educational diagnosticians who are practicing PK–12 educators. \nShe is a state- and nationally recognized educational diagnostician and has been an Endorsed Evaluator for the Learning Disabilities Association of America since 2025. Dr. Frith serves on the boards of directors for both the National Certification for Educational Diagnosticians (NCED) and the New Jersey International Dyslexia Association. SUMMARY:Between the Lines\, featuring Bridget Arend\, author of "Facilitating Seven Ways of Learning"
DESCRIPTION:As teaching continues to evolve\, faculty are faced with an ever-growing array of instructional approaches\, technologies\, and student needs. With so many options available\, how can educators make intentional choices that support meaningful learning while making teaching more effective—and more enjoyable? \nJoin Bridget Arend\, author of Facilitating Seven Ways of Learning: A Resource for More Purposeful\, Effective\, and Enjoyable College Teaching\, for a conversation about the research\, principles\, and practical strategies that help instructors align their teaching methods with their learning goals. Drawing on decades of learning science and classroom experience\, Bridget offers a framework for understanding how students learn and how faculty can create learning experiences that foster deeper engagement and stronger outcomes. \nIn discussion with Penny MacCormack\, ACUE’s Founding Chief Academic Officer\, Bridget will explore the seven evidence-based approaches featured in her book and discuss how they can be applied across disciplines\, teaching modalities\, and institutional contexts. Together\, they will examine what effective teaching looks like in today’s higher education landscape and how faculty can navigate competing demands with greater clarity and confidence. \nWhether you’re redesigning a course\, exploring new teaching approaches\, or seeking fresh inspiration for your practice\, this conversation will provide practical insights grounded in both research and experience.
