As a professor teaching predominantly online courses, I find that icebreakers are essential for fostering a sense of community and trust right from the start. My favorite icebreaker is called “Two Truths and a Lie.” It’s simple, engaging, and helps students learn interesting facts about each other, which can create common ground and spark further conversation.

Here’s how it works: I ask each student to share three statements about themselves in our discussion forum—two truths and one lie. The rest of the class then guesses which statement is the lie. This activity is great because it allows students to share personal stories or unique hobbies, which helps break down initial barriers. It’s also a lighthearted way to get students involved without putting too much pressure on them.

To coax even the shyest students, I start by sharing my own “Two Truths and a Lie” to model the activity and show that it’s okay to be a bit vulnerable. I also encourage them by pointing out that there are no wrong answers and that it’s just a fun way to get to know each other. If a student seems hesitant to participate, I might follow up with them individually, reassuring them that their contributions are valued and that they can take their time. Additionally, I make sure to acknowledge and respond positively to each student’s participation, which helps build confidence and encourages further interaction.
