I wanted to mention an interesting experience I’ve had while teaching online this summer (last day was today). One of my students turned out to be a Computer Science major very engaged in educational aspects of using ChatGPT and GenAI. I was lucky to have him. Whenever we covered course topics, assigned work, assessments, etc., he would promptly join our discussions offering me ideas on the use of AI. His knowledge was tremendous. I encouraged him to continue his participation, letting him know how much I was learning from his particular student perspective. I learned that AI can assess the nutritional quality of a meal from a picture of it! I invited him to join our next departmental meeting as a guest. His insights on minimizing student abuse of these tools were interesting and unique. We also planned to meet next week to do some brainstorming. Showing appreciation to students that bring something special to a class greatly motivates them and increases their sense of validity and chances of a successful performance., as we’ve learned. We cannot forget this.
